It was a passing phase for me. That shit's too expensive, and I'm poor, so to me "goth" was a black t-shirt, army boots, and black HT pants of just about any sort (I think I only ever had 3 pairs of HT chain/stud pants for like 4 years).
But I agree that it's to a certain extent the attitude/fashion more than a lifestyle. A lot of the goth kids I knew were alright, not bad folk, lived normal lives just happened to wear a lot of dark clothes and were just a little emotional. Some were total douches though, those are the goth kids that me and my goth friends would make fun of, and it really confused a lot of people.
Of course any metal head/metalcore kid will always pick on goths for being fags, and I don't blame them, some goths are just fags. But that's metalheads.
Goth is what goth is, just like everything else, there's a good side, and a bad side. Anymore, personally, I just wear normal clothes, I still celebrate good metal and --core but broadened my horizon, learning to enjoy good rap, jazz, blues (real pain-induced music, you want depressing shit, listen to blues), etc. The funnest thing to do though, is go see my buddies that work at the nearby HT in a green polo, bluejeans, and tan airwalks.
